Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger"発売！

僕はドザーなのでmacのことはよくわかりませんが

2chの評価などを見てみるとマカーでもきっぱり肯定派と否定派に二分しているようで、OS9原理主義者とOSXの10.3中道左派と10.4革新派がいるようですな。これはwindowsにも未だに2000原理主義者とXPsp1派と新進XPsp2派がいるようなもんで、これはOSに何を期待しているかが根本的に違う人たちの間では決してOSに対する理解の共有は不可能であるということを示しているのか知らん。

まぁOS9やwindows2000を未だに最高のOSと唱えている原理主義者はよほど物持ちが良くてスペックの乏しいパソコンを使い続けているか新しい媚びるようなインターフェースを嫌悪する偏向嗜好があるのかどちらかという気がしなくもない。僕自身windows2000もwindowsXPも使っているが、コンパネやレジストリを触ればパフォーマンスに体感できるほどの差は生じないし、やはり新しいOSの方が使い勝手がこなれていていいと感じる。macは大学の図書館で少し触ったことがある程度だけど、やはり古いOSに拘泥する理由も好き嫌いの域を出ないのではないかという気もする。OSが重いと感じるならばメモリを増やしたりアプリ優先度を切り替えるソフトを使ったりして補正することはある程度できるのだから。

iMac miniが出たときにmac欲しいと感じたけれど

iMac miniが登場したときには「次期OS"Tiger"には公式には対応しない」とアナウンスされていたが、実際のところはどうなんだろうか。あまりmac事情に詳しくないので人づてに聞いた情報で強縮だけれども、iMac miniにTigerをインストールすると一部機能が働かないこと以外はちゃんと動くらしい。

その作動しない一部機能というのは、1.描画機能のCoreImageが作動しない（GPUの処理能力向上エンジンがうまく働かないので、ディスプレイ画像の美しさが活かせない。雰囲気としては自作パソコンでAGPにグラフィックボードを繋ぐかオンボードGPUを使うかというくらいの差があるのかな？）、2.64bit拡張機能が使えない（appleG5プロセッサはathlon64より先に64bit演算が可能となっていたが、iMac miniに搭載されているappleG4プロセッサはpentium4やathlonXPと同じように32bit演算しかできないので、64bit拡張により性能向上を図ったアプリは正しく作動しないか、作動しても遅くて重いかも？）ということだ。

噂ではiMac miniのG5プロセッサバージョンも近日発売されるかも？ということだが、appleから公式には何も言われていない。需要はかなりあるのだしOS最新バージョンに対応していないiMac miniを発売し続けても売れ行きに対して悪影響を及ぼしそうなことは明白なのでG5版iMac miniが発売されるのも十分考えられることなのかも。
