Windowsの正規品チェック、Windows Genuine Advantage開始

Microsoftは違法コピーをなくすことが自社の利益につながるという信念の元で大々的に違法コピー退治を行ってきていたが、ついに本気を出して違法コピー発見に乗り出したといえる。ヤフオクで買った怪しいCD-Rやwinnyで落としたクラックシリアルを利用しているとこのチェックを通らずに正規品と認めてもらえない。

しかしマイクロソフトはあまりにも厳しい処罰を下せばユーザーが違法コピーから正規品に流れるのではなくそのままLinuxなど別OSに流れてしまうというWindows離れを恐れてか、違法コピーであることが発覚しても即通報・即逮捕というようなことはない。素直にどこで誰から買ったのかなどの情報を提供すれば許してくれるだけでなくその違法コピー版を正規品と無償交換してくれる（買ったという証明が必要）ほか、それ以外の場合でも正規品より若干割安な代金を払えば正規品に交換してくれるらしい。

このチェックはWindwosXPだけのようでWindows2000等にも同様のチェックが科されるのかどうかは今のところ不明。
