テレビパソコンがブームとなってTVキャプチャーカードが各社から発売されている今も、老舗格としてちょっと高品質でちょっと高価格なTVキャプチャーカードを作り続けている硬派なカノープス（http://www.canopus.co.jp/）と同じように、音響機器業界で名を馳せてデジタルミュージック分野でお高くとまっているのがONKYO（http://www.jp.onkyo.com/）。一昔前はONKYO製品はなかなか値崩れせずフルセットのコンポなどで高級志向が強かったが、最近はその音響機器技術を単品化してばら売りする姿勢を見せるようになってきた。

その一つがこのSE-90PCIサウンドボードで、このカードは本当に「音声を出力する機能だけ」しかない。今時どんなマザーボードにも音声出力はオンボードで備わっているので、このサウンドカードにはそういう点ではほとんど存在価値がない。デジタル音声入力や光入出力端子があればまだ音楽関連のクリエイターの需要があるのに、このサウンドカードには音声入力機能は一切備わっていない。だからONKYOでも4桁の値段で手に入るのだとも言える。

僕は最近はCDもMDもすっかり使わなくなり音楽はもっぱらPCで聴いている。これまでグラフィックボードは4種類使ったことがあるのだが、マザーボードにサウンドカードを使ったことはなかったので、届くのを楽しみにしている。
