Thinkpadの内蔵無線LAN 2200BGの怪

ネットで色々検索して調べてみると、IBMの純正内蔵無線LANデバイスIntel PRO/ワイヤレス2200BG 11b/g Mini PCIアダプター73P2802はバルク品のIntel/PRO Wireless 2200BGと同じものであるが、IBMは自社純正のもの以外は認識できないようなハードウェア的なチェック機構をここ数年に発売したノートパソコンに忍ばせているらしい。全く同じもののはずなのに4000円程度のバルク品は使えず、8400円もする自社純正品だけが使えるようになっているということ。なんたる悪徳！

とりあえず、http://www.sekimoto.org/pc/2200bg.htmlなどいくつかのサイトからの情報と2chログを総合してみると、バルク品の無線装置を勝手に内蔵させることは法律的に（電波法?）グレーゾーンに触れているらしい。それで純正品はその法律で認められたもので、バルク品は脱法商品ということになるのか。バルク品を使うために上で描いたサイトにあるようにno-1802.comを使えばとりああえずの使用は出来るようだが、ドライバの衝突などもあって不具合が出ないという保証はない。

先日、自分のデスクトップの方の相性問題で散々難儀した自分としてはちょっと我慢して純正品を買うほうがいい選択肢かなとこころが傾きつつあるけれど、そもそもPCMCIAの無線LANカードを持ってるんだから今さら無線LANを内蔵にする必要もないじゃんという指摘も…
