IBM純正のIntel/Pro Wireless Adapter 2200bgで内蔵無線LAN化

そもそもなぜユーザーが勝手にパーツを導入してアップグレードすることを幅広く認めているIBMがこの内蔵無線LANカードに関しては自社純正のものしか認めていないのかという点も疑問を感じるのだが、それに加えてなぜ自社純正のものと使用できないバルクのものに同じ商品名と同じ型番を使うのかということが不思議だ。同じ型番（2200bg）を使わなければ混乱するユーザーもぐっと減っただろうに。ネット上の情報を見る限りでは、僕と同じ過ちを犯したThinkpadユーザーは少なくない。

商品が届いた後、早速ハードウェアのインストール。Thinkpadは底面のネジを外せば簡単にメモリやminiPCIカードの増設が出来る。Thinkpad X40は簡単に内蔵無線LAN化できるようにディスプレイの周囲にアンテナ線がすでに走っていて、その配線端子が底面カバーを外すと見えるので、これをminiPCIカードに接続しておこう。あとはWindowsを起動するだけ。

これまではThinkpadの起動時に画面に最初に表示されるIntelのロゴは「Intel Pentium M」のものだったのだが、内蔵無線LANカードをインストールしたとたん起動ロゴが「Centrino Mobile Technology」の赤と青のロゴに変わったのは知らなかった。あとはIBMの自動ドライバアップデートサービスを利用してドライバを入手すれば、晴れて内蔵無線LAN化の完成ということになるのだ。
