FOMAでモバイルデータ通信。384kbpsパケット通信体験記

使ってみた感想は、「FOMAのパケット通信はなかなか使える」ということ。これまではパケット従量制の価格構成がイマイチわかりにくく（自分がいまどれだけパケットを送受信したのかがイメージしにくいから）、もしかして油断したらとんでもないパケ死（死語か？）をしてしまうかもしれないという警戒感から手を出せずにいたが、いざ使ってみるとこれはもしかしたらb-mobileの通信カードはいらないかもしれないぞ。

速度はもちろん384kbpsを謳っているだけあって帯域制限の厳しいb-mobileのPHS通信より断然早い。本当はインターネットのスピードテストをやってみたいところだが、パケット従量制のFOMAではちょっとスピードテストをやってみる勇気はないので実測速度はわからないのが残念だが…。

一番気になる価格だが、moperaで接続していればプロバイダ料は不要で、必要になるのは通信費のみ。その通信費は送受信したパケット料に比例するので、パケット料を節約するために「インターネットオプション→詳細設定」で画像を表示しないように設定してみると送受信するのはほとんどテキストデータばかりなのでかなり送受信データを圧縮できる。ドコモの料金プランのうち一番大きなパケットパック90をつけたら1パケット（128バイト）あたり0.015円で通信できるが、インターネットオプションの詳細設定で画像を表示しないように設定しておけばパケット通信量は抑えることができる。画像を表示しなければYahoo!のトップページで3～5円程度しかかからない。このブログのトップページはテキスト量が多いが、これでも5円程度。思ったより安くないかい？パケット従量制と接続時間従量制の値段の高低は比較しにくいが、b-mobileよりも安く使えるんじゃないかという気がしてくる。ちなみにいまどれだけのパケット通信料がかかっているかをチェックするには、ドコモの公式サイトでダウンロードできるFOMAパケットバイトカウンターが便利だ。いろんなサイトを使ってみると、例えばウェブメールではGmailがAjaxとXML技術の恩恵で通信するデータ量をかなり抑えられていることがわかって、Gmailのメールチェックは僕の場合は10通チェックしてもパケット通信に掛かるコストは25円程度だった。

速度・価格で案外使えることがわかったFOMAの384kbpsパケット通信だが、電波のカバー範囲でも強力なドコモのネットワークが利用できるのでWillcomのネットワークよりははるかに津々浦々までカバーしているのは心強い。

もしかしたら、FOMAでモバイル通信はみんなが思っているよりずっと使えるものかもしれないよ。
