SONYウォークマンがついにAAC形式に対応。「井の中の蛙」路線を転換？

自社企画をぶち上げて業界標準を握り、それに対応した機器を販売するのはSONYの「勝利の方程式」であるということが先日の新聞に掲載されていた。たとえば音楽CDの土台を作ったのも、続く音楽MD（Mini Disk）の普及を推し進めたのも、全部SONYである。SONYは20世紀の終盤はこの成功でオーディオビジュアルでの圧倒的な強みを誇っていた。またゲーム方面ではPlayStationで任天堂から事実上の家庭用ゲーム機の標準を奪取したこともこの方程式にのっとったものである。その方式はPanasonicなどもマネしてデジカメでSDメモリーカードの普及を進めたりしている。

この方程式はSONYのブランド力が威光を放っている間は圧倒的な強さを持っていたが、難度かはSONYの大失敗の原因にもなっている。最も有名なものはベータとVHSの家庭用ビデオの標準規格戦争じゃなかろうか。あるいは、Blu-ray DiskとHD Diskの戦いもこの標準規格をかけた戦争であり、現時点ではややBlu-rayが押されているような気がしなくもない。

今回のSONYウォークマンのAACファイル形式対応という決心はSONYにとっては苦渋の決定なのだろう。つまりデジタルオーディオプレーヤーでの業界標準規格を諦め、ウォークマンはiPodのおこぼれに預かることも甘受するということを認めることになるからだ。ユーザーにとっては使い勝手が向上し単純に嬉しい今回の路線変更だが、SONYにとっては一つの時代の終わりを意味しているのかもしれない。
