IE7β2日本語版が登場してその検索機能が話題になっているようだが

これまでのInternet Explorerと違っている点はセキュリティの強化という点の他にもいくつかある。大きな点ではInternet Explorer7がデフォルトでタブブラウザとしての機能を備えていることだろうけれど、透過PNG画像に対応しているなどの点も新しい（もっともこのPNG対応はInternet Explorerにとって新しいというだけで、Firefoxなど他の血統のブラウザでは大昔から当たり前のように対応していたものである）。

そしてもう一つ話題になっているのがInternet Explorer7の検索ボックス。画面の右上にあるこの検索ボックスに検索するフレーズを入れると検索が出来るのだが、デフォルトではMSNサーチがその検索エンジンとして指定されている。GoogleはこれをMicrosoftが圧倒的なブラウザのシェアを利用した検索の独占であると非難しているが、Microsoft側はこれはMSNサーチをデフォルト指定しているのではないと否定している。こうなるともう水掛け論というか、どっちにもどっちの理論があってどちらが正しいと決めるのは難しい。

検索エンジンでのシェアを握ることは今や圧倒的な収益力を実現することに等しいという。Googleがこれだけ驚異的な収益を上げていることの裏にGoogle Adsenseの魅力とGoogle Adwordsの集客力があることはすでによく知られている。Yahoo!が空前の収益を上げているその原動力もオンライン広告である。企業にとっても喉から手が出るほど欲しい自社サイトへのトラフィックを導くオンライン広告は旧来メディア（テレビ、新聞雑誌、街頭看板など）の広告と比べても負けない、あるいは近いうちに凌駕すべきもの。それを巡っての戦いでもある。それを考えると、MicrosoftはOSで築いていた収益を生み出す基幹を逃さないためにも一刻も早くMSNサーチのシェアを、すなわちInternet Explorer7のシェアを増やさねばならないと考えているんだろう。

MicrosoftとGoogle、両社とも今の世界を代表する超巨大企業だが、双方とも生き残りをかけて必死なのである。
