メッセンジャーが異なる会社同士で使えないというのは大変勿体ないことで、もしこれが（たとえば携帯電話のメールが黎明期には同じ電話会社同士でしか送受信できなかったのが今では異なる電話会社同士でも自由に送受信できるように）会社の枠や壁を越えてやりとりができるようになれば格段に普及は進むはずなのだ。普及が進めば広告収入などの面でもそれなりの期待ができるわけだから、メッセンジャーを提供している各社は維持を張らずにさっさと互換メッセンジャーの開発をしてしまえばよかったのだが。

とはいえ、自社のメッセンジャーが主流になれば開発費の面でも有利になるし、シェアが一番手の企業と二番手以下の企業では全くうまみが違うのがネットの世界の掟だからなかなか手を組もうとは思えないのも無理はない。今回は単純にYahoo!とMicrosoftが「反Google」で一致しているからこの決定に至っただけと見ることもできる。

それにしても、Yahoo!messengerは米国版と日本版で中身が違うので、この互換性というものが日本ではどれだけ保障されるのかは開けてみるまで分からない。日本国内でもけっこうこの互換性提供開始を楽しみにしているユーザーは少なくないと思われるけれど、いざその時になってガッカリするような結果になる可能性もあるだけに、今後の発表が気がかりだ。
