ASRock製マザーボード「775Dual-VSTA」をヤフオクに出品中！

いつ頃からASRockのマザーボードが変態呼ばわりされるようになったのか、その起源は僕もよく知らないが、確かに自作板@2ch掲示板では変態と言えばASRockと通じる。おそらくその理由の一つがこのマザーボードの規格が珍しいものであるからだと思われる。

たとえば、出品中のこの775Dual-VSTAは、メモリソケットをDDR1x2とDDR2x2という風に両規格に対応している。グラフィックボードのソケットでは、PCI-ExpressとAGPx8の両規格に対応している。いずれも現行最新規格のハードウェアと、その一つ前のハードウェア規格に当たるもので、同じ機能を有するハードウェアを二重に搭載することができるという点で変態なのだろう。ちなみに、HDDでもATA133IDEとSATAの両規格に対応している。こんな構成のマザーボードはASRock以外には見たことがない。というか、そもそもLGA775ソケットを搭載しているマザーボードでDDR1メモリが使えるという時点ですでに独自路線を突っ走っている感じだ。

しかし、逆に言えばLGA775ソケットに載るCore 2 DuoをDDR1メモリやAGPグラフィックで用いることができるマザーボードはこの製品以外には見あたらない。2006年の最新CPUを、Athlon64全盛期のハードウェアで使えるのだからこのマザーボードの存在は貴重だ。すでにAGPグラフィックに資金を投入した人が新しいグラフィックボードなどを買いそろえるのは出費が伴う。それなら昨年まで主流だった規格のメモリとグラフィックを流用してワンランク上のCPUを買うという選択肢もあって良いはずなのだ。

それにしても、旧世代のメモリとグラフィックボードでCore 2 Duoの性能を活かすためにこのマザーボードは色々とキワモノ的な裏技を使っているようで、ネット上で囁かれる話では、このマザーボードは足の遅いメモリを爆速CPUに合わせるためにチップセットでメモリを疑似オーバークロックしているとか、AGPソケットはPCI-Expressx4の帯域を使ってグラフィックソケットをエミュレートしているだけだとか、色々と苦労もしているらしい。他社にはできない構成で変態と呼ばれるのも、もしかしたらこのASRockの開発陣にとっては光栄なことかもしれない。

ちなみに、このASRockというブランドは自作パーツ大手のASUSの配下にある「ASUSお遊び部門」的なところで、かつてのソニーとアイワのような関係みたい。

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine.
