skype、10人同時会議参加のIntel縛りの謎

僕はこのごろは急にskypeのヘビーユーザーになりつつある。本業関連で仲間と相談しなければならないこと、打合せなんかがあった場合はたいてい集まれる場所に出かけるか、電話を使うかしていた。しかし、skypeがあればお互いが自宅にいたまま、コスト無しで（最初のヘッドセット購入のコストは生じるが）いくらでも話し合うことができる。しかもお互いのオンライン状況がわかるので、相手が忙しくしているところにぶしつけに電話を掛けるということもない。

だが、便利なゆえに最初は1対1だけで使っていたものが最近は3人、4人とだんだん大人数で使うことも多くなってきた。Windows live messenngerだとテキストチャットは20人いても使えるが音声通話は1対1に制限されるのでskypeの会議機能は非常に便利だ。だが最近は、会議の人数が5人に制限されて6人以上で話し合うことができないのをやや不便に感じるようになってきた。

それでインターネットで調べてみたら、なんとskype2.xは10人までの会議を行うという機能があるらしいじゃないか。さらによくよく調べてみたら、この10人会議はIntelのデュアルコアプロセッサを搭載したパソコンでしか使うことができない、とある。Intelの独占契約によって、AMD製プロセッサや、Intelでもシングルコアのプロセッサを搭載している場合は10人会議機能は使えないらしい。僕の自宅のメインパソコンに今載っているのはAthlon 64 X2、モバイルノートのほうはPentium Mである。なんということだ！

このやり方で、僕の中でのIntelの評価は（一時はCore2Duoのおかげで上がりかけたにもかかわらず）再び落ち込んでしまった。僕はアマノジャクな性格なので、こういうことをされるとIntel製デュアルコアプロセッサを載ったパソコンを買おうと思うのではなく、逆に、この契約が切れるまでは絶対にIntel製デュアルコアプロセッサは買うまいと思う性格だから、もうIntel製デュアルコアプロセッサは当分は買うことはなさそうだ（買うとしたら、ヤフオクでの転売用）。

skypeもskypeだ。この契約がIntelに利することはまあ理解できるが、skypeにとってこの契約が本当にプラスになっているのか。世の中に普及しているデュアルコアプロセッサはAMD製のもののほうが多いわけで、しかもAMDを切り捨てている今のうちに他のMessengerアプリなどがもし10人対応の機能を打ち出したら。それまでにできるだけ10人会議の機能を使ってもらってユーザーを囲い込んでおきたい…というような計算はなかったのだろうか。

本当に、この契約の存在をしって僕は呆れてしまった。やり方の汚いIntelと、カネのために魂を売ったskype、そう言われてもおかしくないんじゃないかと思う。
