書籍のISBNコードが2007年1月から13桁へ移行

ISDN（Wikipedia）によると、「ISBN （アイエスビーエヌ、International Standard Book Number） は、世界共通で図書（書籍）を特定するための番号」で「日本語に訳すと国際標準図書番号」とされている。出版物の言語圏、出版社、出版物コードを表す9桁の数字にチェックデジットを付けたものとなっている。出版物の増加に伴ってこれでは書籍に固有の番号を与えることが困難となって、頭に978の3桁を付けた新ISBNコードが運用されることになっている。

それで困るのがオンライン書店を運用するAmazonなど。現在は移行が進められているが、年度の変更に合わせて運用システムを変更するのでちょうど今頃は大変な忙しさに追われていることだろうと思う。特にAmazonはISBNコードをもとにASINというAmazonの固有商品コードを設定して商品の管理を行っている。これが現状では書籍に関してはASIN＝ISBNというルールが成立しているが、2007年1月以降はASINと新ISBNコードはイコールの関係ではなくなるということで、やや混乱が生じる可能性がある。Amazonでは商品の検索に異常が出る可能性があるということを表明している。

また旧来の古典的書店でも商品の受注取り寄せなどでは（おそらくしばらくは店員が気を利かしてくれるとは思うが）将来的には13桁の新ISBNコードを使うことを要求されるだろう。

多くの場面でさりげなく生活に関わる場面があるはずの新ISBNコードなのだが、このコードが全世界で一斉に仕様変更が行われることはあまり周知されていない。もともと業界人くらいしかこのコードを使うことがなかったために一般の愛読家らにまで新ISBNコードの仕様を周知する必要がなかったと言われればそれまでだけれど、もう少し話題になっても良いような気もする。
