AMDの65nmプロセスが苦戦していることについて思う

AMDファンはAMD製品に頑張って欲しいという愛情が異様に強い面がある。少なくともIntelファンがPentiumやCoreを愛するのに比べてAMDファンのAthlonに対する愛情は非常に強い。だからこそ、AMDが期待に答えてくれなかったときの失望や嘆きや憤りが大きくなってしまうのだろうか？part 300を超えてなお年単位で続く自作PC板きっての良スレ「AMD雑談スレ」が、ここ数日は非常に荒れてしまっている。

IntelのCore2Duoシリーズがこれだけ成功を収めたのは、そのプロセッサのコア設計そのものや一般の自作ファンにも手を出しやすいか各設定なども要因の一つだろうが、AMDのCPUとの大きな差はその65nm微細設計（当時のAMDは90nm）だと考えられていた。プロセスサイズが小さくなれば消費電力も発熱も抑えられプロセッサの性能向上に大きく寄与する。AMDより一足早く65nmへ移行したIntelのCPUにもAMDが65nmプロセスを開始すればすぐに追いつけると考えるAMDファンが多かったために、そのAMDが肝心の65nmプロセスへの移行を進める段階になって実はIntelのCore2Duoシリーズとの差が思ったほど埋まっていなかったことを知って嘆くのも無理はない。

僕自身も（Socket AM2ではなく未だに939ではあるが）Socket Aから754、939とAMDのCPUを使ってきたので（Socket Aの前はCeleron 667MHzだったが）、AMDがふるわないのは非常に残念だ。一方でもし今使っているパソコン一式が突然故障して全てイチから組み直さなければならなくなったとしたら、DDR2メモリとPCI Expressのグラフィックカードを購入してIntel Core2Duo E6600あたりで組んでしまうかも知れない。自作PCファンにとってはCore2Duoの魅力が高いことも否定できない。それに匹敵する魅力を持ったCPUがAMDから発売されるのにはしばらく時間がかかりそうだということもAMD離れを助長しそうに思える。

サーバ用途ではAMD OpteronがIntel Zeonに対して優位を続けてきたので、リテール用途・クライアントデスクトップ用途でAMD AthlonがIntel Coreシリーズに対して無理な競争を挑む必要は高くはないというAMDの判断が裏にあるとすれば残念なことだ。AMDがリテール用途を切り捨てることなく、65nmや来るべき45nmプロセスでも、あるいはX4やそれ以上のマルチコア時代になっても、Intelに対抗しうる名CPUをリリースし続けてくれることを願っている。
