OpenOffice.org 2.1日本語版がリリースされたが、普及の兆しは？

これはビジネスSoft板＠2ちゃんねる掲示板などでもしばしば話題になっていることだ。OOoが普及しないのはOOoの性能が悪いのではなく、そのイメージ戦略があまりにも稚拙であることが元凶であるというような言われかたをすることがある。現時点でのOOoのMSOに対する最大のアドバンテージは何よりも価格が安く無料で手に入れられると言うことだ（他にもUSBメモリに収納できるバージョンがあるとか、PDF出力がデフォルトで可能であるというようなメリットもあるが）。逆にMSOのOOoに対する最大のアドバンテージはその普及率の高さで、大概は互換性を気にせずにOfficeファイルを作成することが出来る（厳密にはMSO同士でもバージョンの違いによって互換性の問題は生じる）。

OOoを奨める人はこのMSOの普及率の高さと互換性の敷居の低さの大きさを軽視しているというとらえ方をされることが多い。「ファイル作成時に互換性の問題を気にせずに済むのなら数万円のソフトウェア代金を支払うのは正当な対価であるから気にならない」と考えている人にとっては、「互換性が低いが無料で使える」というOOoのメリットは無力化されてしまう。それに気が付かずに、OOoは無料で使えるオープンソースだから素晴らしい、MSOを使ってる人はMicrosoftに搾取されていると主張してみても、なかなか既存のユーザ以外は付いてこない。

僕はMSOユーザであってOOoを使っているわけでもないので立場としては完全に傍観者似すぎないが、OOoが普及するためには、もっと知名度を上げなきゃならないということの他に、なぜ普及しないのかという問題をもう少し考え直してみることが必要なのではないかと思う。ネット上で喩えられる話しとして、OOoユーザがMSOユーザにOOoを奨める行為が「高価だがデザインの良いブランドものを求めている客に、ユニクロの衣服を奨めている」ような感じであると言われる。要するに、提供しようとしているものが顧客のニーズとあまりマッチしていない。いくら安くても、ニーズとマッチしていないからOOoは普及しない。しかしなぜ普及しないのか、肝心のOOo陣営がイマイチ把握できていない。そういう悪循環に陥っているように思える。
