本日、ジャストシステムのATOK 2007が発売！

もはやATOKは単なる日本語変換システムだけではなく、日本語入力アドバイザーとしての機能まで搭載してかつての姿からは想像も出来ないほどに多機能化しているけれど、基本的なところは何も変わらない。入力者が思った通りの変換をそつなくこなし、文章入力をスムーズにするのがATOKの仕事だ。したがって、日本語入力システムとしてのATOKは存在感が薄ければ薄いほど優秀と言えるんじゃないだろうか。

Microsoft謹製のMS-IMEもVistaとOffice 2007の登場とともにMS-IME 2007になって今回からようやくATOKがはるか昔から搭載していた予測変換を搭載したようだが、（すでに体感した方はおわかりのように）このMS-IME 2007はとてつもなく重い。ネット上で使用者の感想を見る限りでは使い込んでいるうちに予測変換は徐々に変換効率が上がって入力がスムーズになるそうだけれど、やっぱりATOKとの差はそう簡単に埋まるものではなさそうだ。僕はパソコンを使い始めた頃からATOKで入力していた（実家のPCにATOKが入っていたから）のでMS-IMEを使うことはほとんど無いけれど、たまにネットカフェなどでMS-IMEでの文字入力を強制されるとずいぶんとストレスを感じるものだ。

文字入力をたくさんする人（たとえば仕事で文章を書く人、学生でレポート書きまくる人、あるいはブログの更新を熱心に行う人）こそ優れた日本語入力システムを使うべきで、そういう人にはATOKを勧めたい。ジャストシステムの人に怒られそうだけれど基本的に日本語入力システムとしてはATOK 14バージョン程度の時点ですでに完成の域に達していたと思われるので、少々古いバージョンのATOKでも使い続けていて問題はなさそうだ。MS-IMEを使い続けるよりはよっぽどいい。

新しいバージョンのATOKに買い換えるメリットの中でも一番のものは、（予測変換が賢くなっているという点よりも）新語・新固有名詞が収録されているという点かしらん。たとえば合併で新しく誕生した地名、新しい駅名、最近になって知名度が上昇してきた芸能人や政治家やスポーツ選手、最近のベストセラー、流行語…そういった語句は、もちろん古いバージョンには変換語句としては登録されていないので、そういう語句への変換もスムーズにするということがバージョンアップの最大のメリットと言えるかも。
