容量の大きい添付ファイル付きメールのマナー

たまたま僕が加入しているあるメーリングリスト（ML）にWORDのdocファイルが添付されて流された。そのファイルは容量が2MB以上あるもので、しかもそのようなMLが送られてきたのは今月で3度目だ。寛容な同僚たちは大して何も思わなかったようだけれど、僕はMLにこのような添付ファイルを流すのはマナー違反なのじゃないかと思う。

これがMLじゃなくて、相手もこのようなファイルのやり取りを了解しているなら構わない。添付ファイルがあったとしてもそれが数百KB程度のものなら多くの人にはまあ大目に見て貰えるだろう。MB単位になってくるとどうなるだろうか。

全ての人が自宅や会社のブロードバンド回線でそのメールを受信しているわけではない。出張先にいてPHSのか細い回線でなんとかメールをチェックしている人もいるし、もしかしたら屋外でFOMAパケット通信を使ってモバイルしている人もいるかも知れない。もちろんそういう人はメール受信のときに容量の大きいメールはヘッダーと本文テキストのみを受信するように設定するなどの工夫で自衛すれば良いのだけれど、そこまでパソコンに詳しくない人はごまんといる。万が一、FOMAパケット通信でモバイルしていてMB単位のファイルを受信してしまったらパケット代は1メールあたり数百円単位になる。受信にも時間がかかる。MLに流れるメールは自分が直接必要としている内容とは限らないから、無駄なコストになる可能性は大いにあるし、そのコストが受信者みんなのところで多発するから、会社全体としての損失は馬鹿にならない。

1MBを超えるようなら、そういうファイルはアップローダーやオンラインストレージに保管してそのダウンロードURLのみをMLに回す、そういう使い方が普及すればよいのではないかと思う。必要な人がそのMLを見て該当URLにアクセスすればよい。外出先でそのMLを見た人は、帰宅後（or 帰社後）にブロードバンド回線でそのURLを開くことも出来る。これはMLのみならず直接やり取りするメールでも使える方法で、相手にも相手の通信回線やストレージやパケット通信料にも優しい。

もっとも、今は会社で使うような重要なファイルをアップロードするのに適したオンラインストレージはあまり無いというのが実情だ。個人であればYahoo!ブリーフケースのようなサービスを利用できるけれど、たとえ個人情報や新商品情報など外部に機密にしなければならない内容が含まれていないありきたりのファイルであっても、取引先へのメールに添付せずに「こちらのYahoo!ブリーフケースをご覧下さい」では格好が悪い。法人でも使えるようなオンラインストレージサービスがもっと普及しても良い。それに加えて、メールに馬鹿でかいファイルを添付するのはネチケット的にあまりお上品なやり方ではないということがもっと常識として多くの人に認識されていかなければならない。
