Thinkpad T61リリース、発売

Thinkpad Tシリーズはノートパソコンの数々の機種の中でもトップレベルに立つ機種の一つ。T42p、T43などは新品価格が普通のノートパソコンの2倍、30万～40万円はしそうなものだった。搭載されているCPUもメモリもその発売時での最高峰のものが積まれ、キーボードのタッチ感やディスプレイなどのハードウェア的な機能面でも洗練された、名シリーズであった。

ThinkpadでTシリーズより廉価ながら大型ワイドのディスプレイを搭載したThinkpad Zシリーズが登場したのは2005年10月。登場当初はその安直な販売戦略やThinkpadブランドに傷を付けそうなウケ狙いの構成が古くからのコアなThinkpadファンには冷たい視線で見られていた。今でこそZシリーズもThinkpadとして認められ始めている感じはああるが、それはThinkpad ZシリーズがThinkpadの名に恥じないものとなったのではなく、Thinkpadというブランドがビジネスマンのためのプロフェッショナルツールから大衆ノートパソコンに成り下がってしまったことが原因なのではないかと思われる。その中でThinkpad XシリーズとTシリーズは辛うじて高尚なスタンスを保ち続けようとしていたはずだったのだが…。

新しいThinkpad T61はなんとワイド液晶を搭載しており、しかも縦の画素数は990pixelsに削られてしまっている。他のハードウェア面などを考慮しても、どうやらThinkpad Z60に近い構成になってしまっていてTシリーズが安っぽくなってしまっているような気がするのはさみしい。価格も17万円とお求めやすいのは間違いないが、かつては手が出ない価格帯だったThinkpad Tシリーズがお求めやすい価格になってしまったことも時代の変化を感じる。

IBMが大和研究所でThinkpadを作っていた時代と比べて、中国資本Lenovoに買収されたあとのThinkpadは明らかに廉価化が進んでいる。質実剛健というノートパソコンは今ではEPSON Directなどの新興勢力にお株を奪われてしまい、SONY VAIOやThinkpadなどのかつてのブランドは形骸化が進んでいるのか。時代の流れと言えばそれまでだが、今回のT61はTシリーズにとどめを刺されたような気がしなくもない。
