Gmailの容量が3GBを超えた。

この容量3000MB超えには実はからくりがあるようで、これまでは1MB=1024KBとして計算されていたものがどうやらいつの間にか1MB=1000KBと計算されているとのこと。このおかげで数十MB分の容量増加が一気に起こったというわけだ。いずれにしても十分馬鹿でかい容量であるには変わりはない。

だいたいテキストメールだけで3000MBという大容量を使うのはとても無理な話で、毎日数十通～約百通のメールをやり取りしてすべてGmailアカウントにバックアップしている僕も全容量の5%（155MB）しかまだ使えていない。職場の職員向け連絡事項は各部署からメーリングリストで配送されるほか、いろんなアラートメール、いくつかのメーリングリスト（JMMなど）もテキストとして保存している。テキストデータとわずかな添付ファイルで155MBまでのファイル容量を使用するまでにもずいぶんと時間が掛かったが、その間のGmailのファイル容量の増加は1000MBを超えているものだから、Gmailのファイル容量を使い尽くすことは永遠に出来なさそうだ。

ちなみにGmailのファイル容量はPicasaオンラインアルバムの容量と連動している。Picasaオンラインアルバムでファイル容量が足りなくなって追加ディスク容量を購入した場合、それはGmailのファイル容量としても使用することが出来る。もっとも、数GBのファイル容量を使い尽くすことが困難であることには変わりなく、むしろ容量がデカくてもそれだけの使い道がないというのが本音。

MicrosoftはWindows Live SkyDriveなるオンラインストレージサービスの開始を検討している。これまでのHotmailやオンラインアルバムサービスに加えて、様々なファイルをアップロードしてネット上に保存することが出来るようになり、自宅・職場・外出先を問わずにファイルを入手することが出来るようになる。ファイルのドラッグドロップなどにも対応する見込みで、使い勝手は良さそうだ。GoogleのGmailのように、「ディスク容量は馬鹿デカいが使い道がない」という拍子抜けした自体にはならなさそう。

GoogleもGdriveなるオンラインストレージサービスを開始するということが2006年中頃には噂になっていたのだが、結局その後は音沙汰無く一向にその後の情報も出てこない。Google Desktopなどのツールはその後先行してリリースされており、Gdriveのことはどこかへ行ってしまったようだ。Googleもオンラインストレージサービスを展開する地力は十分に持っている。早期のサービス開始を期待したいところ。
