まずはeBay APIを利用して日本語でeBayの商品に入札することができる仲介サイトセカイモンのWebサイト上で、日本のユーザーがeBayの出品商品に入札するというシステムが提供され始めたようだ。というものの、僕がこのセカイモンのサイトを訪れようとした段階ではサーバへのアクセス集中のためかうぇｂサイトを表示するところまでもいかない。サイトが重すぎてパンクしている状態のようで、これではオークションの実現どころではない。今後は日本で海外向けへの商品出品を可能とするプラットフォームも提供されるが、これはセカイモンとは別の組織によってなされる見込み。

またeBayに出品されている商品を日本人ユーザーが入札する際には日本語でのオークション参加が可能となっている。海外のオークションに参加するからといって必ずしも英語堪能である必要はないということになるが、この翻訳はWebサイトのテキストデータの自動機械翻訳であるから日本語としての翻訳精度がどの程度であるのかは未知数。英語を全く読み書きできない状態でオークションに参加することには依然として一定のリスクが付きまとうことは避けられそうにない。

世界最大のオークションサイトであるeBayに日本国内から参加できることのメリットは計り知れないが、やはりこれまでの国内限定オークションでは見られなかった様々な問題も今後現れてくることだろう。日本国内でも北海道や沖縄の住民は送料の問題でオークション参加の容易さが本州住民に比べて難ありの現状を考えると、海外との商品を売買することにおける郵送料コストの問題は馬鹿にならない。さらに関税の支払いも免除はされず、安く海外商品を手に入れるという点においても海外の免税店舗へのショッピングツアーのようなわけにはいかない点がある。さらには、取引でトラブルを起こした場合の対処や救済措置に関してどの程度までのサポートが得られるのか、あるいは全部自分で処理する必要があるのか、この点も無視できない問題である。自動翻訳の性能の限界に原因があるトラブルも尽きないことだろう。日本国内でも入金したが商品が届かないという問題は時々あることだが、さて海外のオークションに参加した場合にこの問題はどうなるのか。

まだまだ課題は山のようにあるこの提携、果たしてうまく行くのか、見通しはそれほど明るくは無さそうだ。
