Gmailがネイティブでラベルカラーの適用可能に

Gmailのラベル機能とは、メールにキーワードを用いてタグ付けを行い、フォルダ内検索などを容易にするもの。フォルダに分類するという概念を持たないGmailだが、フォルダという概念とタグという概念の中間に当たるようなこのラベルの機能を用いることでメールが分類できるようになる。同じメールに複数のラベルを適用することもできる。

これまではGmailで各メールにラベルを適用すると各メールのタイトルの前に適用されているラベル名が表示されていたが、その表示色は緑色に固定されていてユーザが変更することは出来なかった。あまり目立たない色調であったためにラベルを適用してもパッと一覧しただけではどのようなラベルが適用されているのかわかりにくいという声があった。このラベルをローカルCSSの機能を用いて色分け表示するのが、Greasemonkeyと併せて活用する「ラベルカラー」というもので、Gmail older versionでは人気のあるFirefox addonだったが、Gmail newer version（いわゆるGmail 2.0）になってからはこの機能が使えずにいた。

新しくGoogle自らがこのラベルカラーの機能を提供し始めたことによって、Greasemonkeyが使えないブラウザなどでも容易にラベルを色分け表示することが出来るようになっている。この機能の追加は、Gmailをますます便利なものにすることだろう。優れたモノはどんどん取り入れる姿勢はさすがGoogleと感心する。歓迎できる仕様変更だ。
