実は重いFirefox用Googleツールバー

僕はデスクトップ機はInter Core2Duo E6750を搭載しているものに変えたのでブラウザ使用などの多少のことではCPU利用率があまり上がらず比較のしようがないが、ノートはThinkpad X40を用いていて搭載しているCPUはPentium M 1.0GHz。Pentium Mは非常に優れた設計をしているとのことでAthlon 64に押されていたIntelを救った名CPUである。ところが、ノート用にカスタマイズされた超低電圧版は消費電力が非常に低くTDP 7wという脅威の省エネCPUであるが、クロック数が1.0GHzであることから若干パワー不足であることは否めない。

Firefoxでスムーズスクロールをオンにすると、スクロールのたびにCPU利用率が100％に達して非常に不便を感じていたので、色々なアドオンを切ったり設定を変えたりしてFirefoxが軽くならないかと試していたのだが、その結果として行き着いた結論が、Firefox用Googleツールバーは実はとても重いということだ。

結局いまはFirefoxデフォルトの検索バーを用いるようにしてGoogleツールバーはオフにしている。検索履歴がワンクリックで開けないのが若干不便ではあるが、検索機能そのものは特に代わりがないし、Gmailはブックマークに入れてあるのでこれもそれほど困らない。検索枠の大きさを変更できないのでレイアウトの自由度が制約を受けるが、これはまもなく登場するFirefox3で解決する見込み（現在使用しているのはFirefox 2.0.0.12）。むしろFirefoxの動作が若干軽くなっただけメリットが大きい。

ちなみに、Firefoxデフォルトのスムーズスクロールも意外に重い。デフォルトのスムーズスクロールを切って、アドオンでSmoothWheelを使ったほうが、Firefox全体としては軽くなるようだ。なお、このSmoothWheelはFirefox2系になってから公式アドオンの資格を外されてしまったので、公式サイトからはダウンロードできなくなってしまっている。残念なり。
