「GDI++.dll」を使ってWindowsでもっと綺麗なCleartypeを。

世間一般にもmacは美しくwindowsは見た目が悪く、Windowsユーザーの中の一定の割合がmacにあこがれを持っていて、みんなアプリの互換性や職場の事情で「嫌々ながら」Windowsを使っているというような、macに都合が良くWindowsに都合の悪いイメージが先行している。Windowsの画面がなにやら汚く見えたとしたら、それはWindowsやInternet explorerのせいではない。ついでにいうと、MS Pゴシックの見た目が悪いのでもない。悪いのは、Windowsのアンチエイリアス技術である。

MS Pゴシックというフォントは、実は日本語フォントの中でもかなり美しいフォントセットなのである（MS明朝も）。その証拠に、PDFファイルを出力できるフリーソフト（たとえばクセロPDF）を使って、MS PゴシックやMS明朝で書いた適当なword文書をPDFにして表示してみよう。そのPDFをadobe readerで見てみると、綺麗にアンチエイリアスがかかった美しい文字を目にすることだろう。日本語の美しいパソコン用フォントはmacが誇るヒラギノだけではなく、もちろんMicrosoftが慌てて作ったMeiryoだけでもない。

せっかくこんなに美しいフォントなのにInternet explorerやFirefoxでその美しさの恩恵にあずかることができないのは、繰り返しいうがWindowsのアンチエイリアス技術の低さ故である。windows用safariではいくぶん綺麗なフォントが表示できるそうだが、そんなシェアの低いブラウザはとても使う気になれない。なんとかInternet explorerかFirefoxでmacに負けない美しいアンチエイリアスが使えないかと考えてみると、良いアプリケーションがあるではないか。

GDI++.dllは「Windows の低品質なクソフォントレンダラ」の「フォントの表示品質を改善」するということを謳っている。WindowsのアプリケーションをGDI++.dllを通して起動することで美しい画面表示を得ることができるようになるのだ。起動の際にGDI++.dllを通す必要があるというのが面倒で、（たとえばexeファイルの右クリックメニューに「送る→GDI++.dll」という選択枝を加えておくといくぶん面倒さはマシになるのだが）これがWindowsに標準装備されればさらに使い良いのにな。Windowsもフォントレンダラを改めるだけでこれだけ画面表示の印象を変えることができるのだ。WindowsやMS Pゴシックも捨てたものではない。
