中古の無線LANルータを買ってきて無線LANを構築した

AirStation WLA2-G54は機能がどうとかよりも、本体がコンパクトでデザインがどこに置いても違和感なくなじめる丸っこいスタイルなのがお気に入り。実家に無線LAN環境を構築したときも同じ、Airstationの丸っこいモデルなのだ。通信機能としてはIEEE802.11g 54Mbpsに対応しているので当面は問題ない（だって、54Mbpsを超える通信速度が必須になるような用途で使ってないし）。IEEE802.11nとかIEEE802.11aとか無くても、普通のパーソナルユーザはIEEE802.11g 54Mbpsで十分でしょ。セキュリティ機能としてはWPAには対応しているけれどWPA2はまだ普及する前なので公式搭載されていない。でもこれだって、WPA-PSK AESを使っていれば実際運用上は問題なく、一般家庭のネット用途では十分なセキュリティが確保できる。

結局無線LANを自宅に引くならば中古の無線LANアクセスポイントがあれば十分なわけだ。もっとも、中古の無線LANルータ/アクセスポイントとしては54Mbpsに対応しておらずIEEE802.11b 11Mbpsの通信しか行えないものもある。11Mbpsでも困らないと言えば困らないのだが、せっかく自宅に光ファイバーを引いていたりするならば54Mbpsに対応したものを使いたい気もする。このへんは個人のこだわりの程度で決めるもので、11Mbpsで十分と妥協するならば1000円台で無線LANルータを手に入れることも可能。
