Picasa 3を使ってみたが、そのタグ機能に関して

Picasa 3そのものは実際にさわっていただくのが良い。言葉でグダグダ説明してもなかなかうまく伝えるのは難しいから。動作はスムーズだし、マニュアルなどを一切見なくてもわかりやすいのがGoogleがリリースするアプリケーションの特徴だ。写真を並べて鑑賞するにも使い勝手は良いし、簡単な写真編集機能・レタッチ機能が搭載されている。写真のレタッチを本格的にやりたいなら専用ソフトウェアを購入すれば良いのだが、もしかしたら個人の一般的なユーザの要求には（たとえばPhotoshop elementsなどを購入しなくても）Picasa 3だけでやりたいことの大半はできてしまうのではないかと思うくらい。

残念なのはタグ機能がXMPでなくIPTCに記録するタイプだということ。Picasaとライバル関係にあるWindows live Photo Gallery（フォトギャラリー）と比べてもこの点は勿体ない。Picasaとフォトギャラリーは共にjpgファイルなどの情報をプロパティに書き込むのだが、この規格には大きくわけて、EXIF、IPTC、XMPがある。EXIFはデジカメがそのシャッタースピードや絞り値などを書き込む場所として多用されている。XMPはAdobeが提唱する画像データの規格で、今ではMicrosoftなど多くの有力IT企業も同調する姿勢を見せている。問題はIPTCで、これは昔に報道関係者が画像のやりとりをする際に使われた規格だそうだが、XMPに立場を奪われつつある（将来的には絶滅するかもしれない）。PicasaもIPTCとXMPの読み取りには対応しているのだが、Picasaはタグの書き込みにはIPTCにしか対応していない。フォトギャラリーはXMPに対応している。Picasaでつけたタグは、他のIPTCに非互換のソフトウェアでは読み取れないという事態が発生してしまう。やはりタグなどの情報は今後標準的となってゆくであろうXMPで記載する方が良いように思われるのだが、PicasaはXMPに舵を切り替えるつもりはなさそう。
