Picasa ウェブアルバムの顔認識機能がすごいけれど怖い件

Google が提供する Picasa 3 にはアップロード機能が搭載されていて、Picasa ウェブアルバムに画像のアップロードができる。ウェブアルバムにアップロードされた画像は、例えば公開設定をして他人に見せたり共有したり出来るが、公開しなくても自分専用のインターネット上の画像保存スペースとして利用も出来る（ただし無料では現時点で1.0GBまで）。

この Picasa ウェブアルバムには顔認識機能が搭載されていて、写真の中で顔を勝手に認識してタギングすることができる。顔認識は今ではデジタルカメラに搭載されてオートフォーカスしたりする等で一般の人々にも徐々に知れ渡ってきているものだけれど、これがインターネット上となると目新しい。さらに自動的に似ている顔をグループ分けして同一人物であると認識してくれる（しばしば間違えることもあるみたい）。これで Picasa ウェブアルバムが認識して分けてくれたグループに名前を付けると、それが名前タグとなる。名前タグがあれば、たくさんの写真の中から特定の友人が写っている写真だけを抽出することも簡単にできるのだ。

この機能はデフォルトではオフとなっているが、Picasa ウェブアルバムの設定画面から簡単にオンにできる。非常に便利で今後の使い勝手の広がりにも期待を抱かせる機能だが、一方で個人名とその顔写真がインターネット上に出てしまうというのは怖くもある。もしこの情報が流出でもしようものなら、僕や僕の友人の顔と名前がインターネット上に広がってしまうからだ。

Google はおそらく、みんなに名前タグを付けてもらうことで顔認識機能と同一人物かどうかの判別機能のためのデータを集めていることなんだろう。集めたデータをもとにして、顔写真のデータベースでも作り出す気だろうか。Picasa 3 本体にはこの顔認識機能が無いにもかかわらず Picasa ウェブアルバムにこの機能があるのは、インターネット上で名前タギングをやってもらわないと貴重なデータを回収できないという理由があるのだろう。遅かれ早かれ、いつかは Picasa 3 本体にもこの機能は実装されるとは思うが。
