Gmailが屋外でもサクサク使えるiPhoneが欲しくなった

一昨日、大学時代の友人達と久々に会う機会があったのだが、そこで友人のひとり（彼も僕と同じくデジタルアイテムが大好きである）がiPhoneを使っていろんなWebサイトにアクセスしたりGmailのチェックをしたりしている。訊くと、彼は（もともとWindows派であったが）今ではMac bookを使い、屋外ではケータイよりもiPhoneなのだという。そう言いながら、iPhoneでGoogleマップをピンチしたりスクロールして軽快に操るさまを僕に見せるのだった。

ケータイメールはもうほとんど使わず、自宅でも職場でもメールのやり取りはGmailなんだと言う。それだけなら僕も同じだ。自宅にいるときも職場にいるときもケータイメールよりもGmailが中心で、職場のメールアドレスもGmailに転送してやり取りしている。しかし、彼の場合は屋外でもGmailなのだ。iPhoneを使って。僕のドコモSH902iでもGmailのHTMLベースのページにはi-modeでアクセスできるが、あれはあってないようなもの、使い勝手が悪すぎる。iPhoneで彼がやって見せたように、サクサクスイスイとメールチェックをすることが出来ない。

自分が屋外で本当にGmailに来たメールを確認する必要があるのか、あるいはGoogleマップをパソコンでなくiPhoneで見ることができるようになったとしてそれが1年のうち360日くらいを同一市内（というかむしろ同一区内）で過ごしている僕にとって一体何の役に立つのか。冷静になってそういうことを考えてみると、実は僕にとってiPhoneって全く必要性がない高価な玩具である。たぶん彼にとっても事情は同じで、やはりiPhoneは高価な玩具でしかない。残念なことに僕は彼に比べてインカムが3分の2ほどしかないので、彼と同じように僕がiPhoneを買うことはできなさそうだ。欲しいけれど買えない、まるで切ない恋心なのであった。
