Googleストリートビュー功罪の「功」の面

個人住宅の庭が丸見えになったり、クルマや顔が意図せず世界中に発信されたり、あるいは諸外国では犯罪集団の情報収集に使われたりということでロクな評判の無いGoogleストリートビューだが、冒頭に書いたように、なかなか直接訪れてみることができないときにその町並みの姿を見ることができるのは大きなメリットだ。

大阪京都で25年間を暮らしてきていま某県に住んでいる。ホームシックというわけではないが時折無性に京都が懐かしいと感じる。出町の鴨川の景色、河原町通りの喧噪、高野のショッピングセンター、8年間住んだ大学周辺の住宅街などが懐かしく思えるときに、インターネットがあればその姿を少し見てみることができる。Googleストリートビューはそういう機会を提供している。

Googleのツールはもともと、基本機能的に優れてはいるが応用的な使い方はユーザに任せるという自由放任な姿勢が目立つものが少なくないが、Googleストリートビューもその一つで、良いものになるか悪いものになるかはGoogleの意志とは関係なく周りのユーザが決めるものらしい。そういうGoogleの哲学は僕は嫌いではない。

もっとも、世界中の書籍を一部の著作権者との契約のみで全て電子化してしまうなどの行動はあまりにも乱暴（別の言い方をすると、あまりにも未来的）すぎて、しばらくは一般世論に受け入れられそうにはないが。あれはさすがにGoogleも突っ走りすぎたのではないかと思う。

ちなみに、Googleストリートビューはプライバシーに配慮して、カメラの高さを下げた撮影車で再度画像の収録をし直すようです。
