UXGA大画面ディスプレイを買った。中古で。

中古、箱無し、説明書無し、VGAケーブル無し、電源ケーブル無しというもの、つまり剥き身の本体のみのディスプレイが8800円で売られていたのだった。画像解像度はUXGA（1600x1200pixel）、アスペクト比4:3、ツルピカでないノングレアタイプでベゼルカラーはシルバーである。本体に貼られているシールを見ると、どうやら2003年の製品らしい。しかし画面のヤケはないし明るさの低下やドット抜けもない。ずいぶんとお買い得な買い物をした。

このところ販売されている液晶ディスプレイといえばどれもこれもワイドディスプレイばかり。最近は16:10では飽きたらず、16:9というさらにワイドに拍車がかかった製品まで出てきていて、まったく自重する気配がない。しかも軒並みツルツル光沢があるグレアタイプの液晶画面ばかりである。よくない傾向だ。そもそも、映画を見るならともかく、ネットや文書作成で必要な液晶画面のスペックは画面の縦ピクセル数である。

ネットで見るたいていのWebサイトは縦長である。ブログであれ、ニュースサイトであれ、そのほかのWebサイトであれ、縦長のサイトをホイールを回して下にスクロールしながら見るものである。右方向へスクロールしながら一つのWebページをみることはまずない。マウスのホイールが横方向のスクロールにも対応している製品も最近はあるが、基本的に横スクロールというものは滅多に使うことがない。

同様に文書作成をするとして、Wordでも一太郎でも文章を書いてゆくと基本的に文書は縦に長くなってゆく。あるいはビジネス文書を開くとして、PDFは縦に展開されるのでこれをWebページ同様に縦にスクロールしながら読む。Powerpointでも作成中のスライドは縦に配列される。横スクロールを使うことはない。横スクロールが活躍する唯一のメジャーソフトウェアはExcelで、Excelで大きい表を作成するときだけはさすがに横長画面の恩恵にあずかることができる。

こうやって考えると、まともにパソコンを使おうとすれば（すなわち映画鑑賞とゲーム以外の使い方をすると）、液晶画面は縦に長く使うことが普通なのである。したがってパソコンの液晶画面が横へ横へと広くなってゆくのは理解しがたい現象だ。そういう意識で4:3のアスペクト比の液晶ディスプレイを探していて、この製品に出会ったのだ。自宅に持ち帰って、Thinkpad T60のD-SUB端子からこの液晶ディスプレイに出力を行った。中古で購入したディスプレイは問題ないのだがThinkpad T60側の問題で接続がDVI端子でないのが残念だが、これはやむを得ない。必要とあらばThinkpad T60用にドックを購入するしかないのだが。検討してみるか。
