世代遅れのThinkpad T60では徐々に苦しくなってきた

OSはWindows XPのままで特に問題はない。メモリは購入時のDDR2 512MBから2GBまで増設している。CPUは購入時のCore Duo T2400を取り外して現在はCore 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz)に交換している。HDDも購入時5400rpm 100GBだったのものを、現在は7200rpm 320GBに変更している。ディスプレイは1400*1050だから特に不満は無いが、今はThinkpad Tシリーズに使用できるドックを使用して外付けディスプレイ 1600*1200に出力している。出力はMobility Radeon X1400のDVI出力で、発売当時のノートパソコンとしてはかなりレベルの高いGPUだったのだが。

今後は32bitのメモリ容量制限とこのGPUがネックになってゆくのだろうなぁと感じる。そう感じたのは動画編集のためにAdobe Premiere elements 8を使用したときのこと。もともとDTV板＠2ch掲示板などでもこのソフトウェアは重くてよく落ちることでかなり叩かれていたのだが、このソフトウェアの目玉の一つがGPUでのレンダリング支援。当然最近のGPUでしかこの機能は活用できない（そもそもRadeon自体がPremiereと相性が悪いようだが）。メモリも4GBオーバーを積んでいることがこのソフトウェアを快適に使用するコツのようで、確かに2GBしかメモリのないThinkpad T60ではそのうちの1.5GB近くをPremiereが使用しており窮屈そうだ。

また数日前にRC7から正式版になったFlash Player 10.1もGPUを利用しての描画を詠っている。こちらもかなり相性問題が厳しいようだが、Mobility Radeon X1400はこの機能に関しても対応外。GPU支援機能が付いてもどの程度変わるかは不明だが、GPUとメモリ搭載量から時代遅れになりつつあることを痛感する。Thinkpad T60は4GBメモリまで搭載できるが32bit OSでは3GBまでしか認識せず、またOS管理外領域としてRAM Diskとしてこれを使うのもBIOSレベルからのクラックが必要とのことで、とても一般人が手を出せる領域ではない。

さすがにそろそろ買い換えか、と思わせるこのところのパソコン環境だが、Lenovoのサイトを見てもThinkpadはワイドディスプレイになってしまったものばかりで、どうも食指が動かない。他の大手PCメーカーも同じ。どうしてこうもワイドディスプレイばかりになってしまうのか。こまったことである。
