コンパクトな無線LAN子機「WLI-UC-GNM」を購入したが

自宅ではThinkpad内蔵無線LANでインターネット無線LAN接続をしている。ところがモジュラージャックから自分の部屋までは途中で曲がり角のある廊下があり、鉄筋コンクリートのマンションの壁があって、あまり電波感度は良くない。Windowsのワイヤレスネットワーク接続で接続しているが、電波強度を示すアンテナ5本中2本程度しかアンテナが立っていない。

そこで802.11nによる接続を導入すれば状況が変わるかなと思ってWLI-UC-GNMを購入したわけだが、実際には通信速度は向上しなかった。もともと電波状況の悪さからスピードテストでも10Mbpsを切っていたのだが、WLI-UC-GNMに変えてみると3Mbps程度しか出なくなってしまってこれまでの802.11gのほうがよっぽど速い。リンク速度がそもそも20Mbpsに到達しない。ためしに台所にあるモジュラージャックとルータのすぐそばにパソコンを持ってゆくとアンテナは5本たつ（リンク速度も65Mbpsまで上がる）のだが、そこから20mほど離れた自室にパソコンを持ってゆくとたちどころに元通りの電波の弱さに戻ってしまう。

もうひとつの問題点は、パソコンのUSB端子に接続して1時間もするとこのWLI-UC-GNMが非常に熱を持ってしまうことだ。素手でじっとさわっていることができないほどに熱くなり、ちょっとThinkpad T60が大丈夫か心配になってしまう。ネットでWLI-UC-GNMの発熱問題について検索してみてもあまりヒットしないので個体差の問題なのだろうか？何にせよ、設定が悪いのかハズレ個体だったのか、これを買って良かったと感じる点が今のところ全然無いのが困った。不幸中の幸いは、価格が安かったこと。2000円前後で購入できるので大きな損害にはならずに済んだ。
